Losing one Mercedes key is a hassle. Losing every key is a different situation. With no working key to copy, a new key can't simply be duplicated. It has to be made for the car from scratch and accepted by the car's security system.
The good news: for 1999 to 2013-14 Mercedes-Benz models, all keys lost is a job Eurokeys handles. Here's what it involves and what to do next.
Why All Keys Lost Is Harder Than a Spare
Most Mercedes models from this era use the infrared SmartKey with the FBS3 security system. The key isn't just cut metal. It carries electronics that exchange encrypted data with the car's Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS), which stores the records for each key paired to the car.
When you still have one working key, making a spare usually means working from that key and the car together. When every key is gone, there's nothing to start from, so a new key has to be produced using the car's own data so the EIS will recognize it. That takes specialist equipment and more time than a simple duplicate.
One more wrinkle: some Mercedes models switched to the newer FBS4 system before 2015, so the model year alone doesn't settle which system your car uses. Your VIN does.
First Steps If You've Lost Every Key
- Search thoroughly. Check bags, jacket pockets, couch cushions, the last places you parked, and with anyone who drove the car recently.
- Call places you visited. Restaurants, gyms, stores and offices often hold found keys.
- Think about security. If the keys were stolen, or lost with something showing your address, consider reporting it to police. A replacement key can help, but so can removing the lost keys from use. Ask about this when you call.
- Don't let a tow truck haul the car off on a guess. Find out your options first. Because Eurokeys is a mobile service, we come to the car.
What to Have Ready
- Year, model and VIN. The VIN is on the driver's side of the dashboard, visible through the windshield, and on your registration and insurance card.
- Proof that the car is yours, such as the registration or title with matching ID. Any reputable key specialist will ask before making a key for a car with no keys.
- Where the car is and whether it's locked.
Is It a Lost Key or a Failed Switch?
Sometimes "my keys don't work" turns out to be a car problem, not a key problem. If you still have a key but the car won't respond to it, the ignition switch or steering lock may be the issue. Read Mercedes key turns but nothing happens: ELV vs EIS vs key before assuming the key is the cause. If the ignition switch itself has failed, EIS cloning may be part of the fix.
Dealer vs Specialist
A Mercedes-Benz dealer can order keys for your car, but that typically means getting the car to the dealer and waiting for the key to be ordered. A mobile key specialist that handles Mercedes all-keys-lost work can come to where the car is parked. Every situation differs, so it's worth calling and comparing before you decide.
Mercedes Models Eurokeys Works On
Eurokeys handles Mercedes-Benz key making, duplication and repair for 1999 to 2013-14 models, including the W204 C-Class, W207 and W212 E-Class, X204 GLK and Sprinter. We also offer EIS cloning and steering lock replacement for these cars. See our all-keys-lost service and key duplication.
Once You Have a Key, Get a Spare
After an all-keys-lost job, the best way to avoid a repeat is a second key. Making a spare from a working key is generally simpler than starting from zero, so it pays to do it while everything works. Keep the spare somewhere safe at home, not in the car.
