Why European keys need programming

European manufacturers were early adopters of advanced key technology. Depending on your vehicle, your key may include a transponder chip that communicates with the immobilizer and remote functions for locking, unlocking and trunk release. Without a correctly programmed chip, the engine won’t start even if the key turns.
